The gear shifting mechanism has a shift drum (62) having on both sides compression springs (63,64) which allow the drum to slide axially on a drum shaft (6) when a gear shift (81) cannot enter recesses (831). The springs urge the gear shift via the drum into the recesses when they are aligned to allow smooth engagement of forward/reverse gears (82,83). The shift drum has at one end a gear (61) meshed with a gear (51) fixed on a spindle (5) so that when the spindle is rotated the gear (51) via the gear (61) rotates the drum. A fork (71) is engaged with the drum so that the drum rotary motion is converted to linear motion which is transferred to the gear shift.
