PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber type polarizer that has excellent high- power durability, with which connection loss can be reduced, and that can be small-sized. SOLUTION: Two polarization maintaining optical fibers 1 having a different propagation constant relative to two orthogonal linear polarizing light beams are parallelized with the polarization axes positioned neatly side by side, and melt-stretched to form a melt-stretched part 2. When a nonpolarizing light beam is made incident from the port 1 of this optical fiber type polarizer, light leaks out from a core 3 in the tapered part of the melt-stretched part 2 where the outer diameter of each polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 is gradually made thin, causing mode coupling between the adjacent optical fibers. The two polarization maintaining optical fibers 1 both have double refractivity, enabling X and Y polarizations to have a difference in the degree of coupling and to be outputted by selecting the port 2 and port 3.
