PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically optimize the degree of improvement of picture quality and the degree of increase of processing time due to detection/correction of a defective part. SOLUTION: Respective parameters of the size of a read image recorded in a photographing film, the size of an output image to be recorded in a sheet of printing paper, the film sort (negative film/reversal film) of the photographing film, the sort (manual carrier/auto-carrier) of a film carrier storing the photographing film and a reading mode (one-frame reading mode/multi-frame continuous reading mode) for reading are recognized (100 to 108) and a detection reference of the defective part to the image to be processed and the upper limit of the number of pixels to be corrected are set up on the basis of respective recognized parameters (110). Then the defective part is detected in accordance with the set detection reference (112), pixels (defective part) to be corrected are selected on the basis of the set upper limit of the number of pixels to be corrected (114) and the correction value of the defective part to be corrected is determined (116).
