To impregnate a carrier material (12) with a liquid, the material is passed in succession for shaping to be wound at an initial cylinder sleeve (34) and then to a second cylinder sleeve (36) in the opposite winding direction. The first cylinder sleeve has an inner applicator which soaks its inner surface (38) partially with the liquid and partially impregnate the carrier material. A second applicator within the second cylinder sleeve partially impregnates the carrier material taken from the outer surface (42) of the first cylinder to the inner surface (44) of the second cylinder, and the material is fully impregnated.
