The conveyor (3) has at least one drive mechanism (4,5) and walls (6,7), crosswise to the direction of travel (9), between which is a compartment (8) containing the piece goods (2). The conveyor consists of two separate parallel circulating elements (10,11) preferably chain-bars. The walls of the two elements engage alternately. At least one drive mechanism (14) moves the elements. The piece goods are carried by a vacuum belt (25) which has apertures (27) for sucking ambient air in the compartments.
