Degreasing process, for metalliferous scale sediments accumulated from direct-cooling water in iron and steel hot rolling and casting operations, uses surfactant mixed into effluent clarifier to separate emulsified oil from solids

A process for degreasing fine scale sediments contained in a stream (I) fed to clarifier (1), to which is dosed a surfactant. The underflow (III) comprises sediment with reduced oil content, and the underflow (VII) is an oil rich emulsion. The process may be repeated to achieve a required oil content for the sediment. The cleaned sediment may be de-watered using a decanter centrifuge (3) , belt filter, or filter press. The emulsion may be split by chemical addition or use of a membrane.
