The apparatus includes a spreading-mapping device (1) for processing data symbols occurring in a symbol clock cycle to form a phase modulation signal in which the data symbols are spread using a spreading sequence comprising spreading symbols. The spreading symbols comprise a higher clock rate than the symbol clock rate by a predetermined spreading factor, so that the data symbols are converted into phase changes and the spreading symbols of the spreading sequence are converted into absolute phases of a transmission signal. A phase modulator modulates the phase of the transmission signal in accordance with the phase modulation signal. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a receiver apparatus; (2) a method of transmitting data without channel encoding; (3) a method of transmitting data; and (4) a method of receiving and evaluating a received signal.
