The containers are provided with a Bluetooth (RTM) adaptor coupled to sensors for detecting variables such as the temperature in a container, if the doors have been opened, what acceleration it has been subject too etc. Access points are installed along the transport route, on vehicles, on ships, at ports etc. for exchanging data with the adaptors via a network (internet, intranet etc.). A data processing system compares the variables with reference thresholds, and initiates operations on-site accordingly.
