Device for controlling motor vehicle safety systems dependent on seat occupancy, has a seat occupancy sensor and a force measurement device the output signals of which are logically linked in an evaluation device. The seat occupancy sensor is a pressure film sensor (3) that measures the pressure distribution over the seat horizontal surface. A force sensor (7) is placed under the seat surface to measure the weight of a person sitting in the seat. An Independent claim is made for a method for seat occupancy dependent control of motor vehicle safety systems.
