Diesel or other combustion exhaust is passed through an opening section (14) in the device (10) to direct flow into a treatment zone containing at least one monolith section (16) and one filter screen section (18). Both sections are shown repeated downstream of the opening section (14) of the treatment chamber enclosed by wall structure (15). Following treatment, the exhaust gas is passed from the last of the treatment sections to exit (20). Either one or both of sections (16 and 18) can be catalyzed, either by pretreatment or by use of a fuel borne catalyst, e.g., containing platinum and/or other metal such as cerium or iron.
