The circuit has an ignition transformer (12) whose secondary side is (L2) connected to the lamp to be ignited and whose primary side (L1) is connected to a circuit which triggers the ignition pulses. This circuit triggers pulses with a repetition rate of at least 2 kHz and with a pulse duration of less than 0.5 5s. The circuit which triggers the ignition pulses contains at least one Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor or IGBT (14) and a drive stage (16) which generates a signal which is applied to the IGBT to switch it.
