[Class 44.] In a door latch of the kind having both inside and outside handles for operating the latch bolt and means whereby a movement of one handle locks the bolt against movement by the other handle, the inner and outer handles are movable about a common horizontal axis, and a movement of one handle about its axis in a direction opposite to its opening movement, locks the bolt against movement by the other handle without hindering the retraction of the bolt by the striker plate &c. directly engaging the bolt. In one form the latch plate 2 is actuated by a follower 51 carried by a U-shaped lever 16 fixed to a bush 14 on the outside of the lock body and extending round the edge of the window glass to bear on a bush 13 on the inside of the lock body. A lever 56 fixed on the bush 13 has a lug 57 engaging the lever 16, so that when the inner handle is turned clockwise, the lug lifts the lever 16 and causes the follower 51 to open the bolt. When the inner handle is turned in the opposite direction, a slot 59 in the lever 56 moves a lug 60 on a lever 61 into engagement with the follower 51 so that the latter cannot be moved by the outer handle to open the bolt. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the follower 39 operated by the inner handle has a lug 42 engaging a cam slot 43 in a lever 44 having a projection 45. When the handle is turned to retract the bolt 29, the lug 42 slides in an arcuate portion of the slot and the lever 44 is not moved, but when it is turned in the opposite direction, the lug moves the lever 44 and brings the lug 45 into the path of a lug 49 on the follower 46 operated by the outer handle, thus preventing retraction of the bolt by the latter. The inner handle and follower 39 are kept in locking position by a lug 50 on a lever 36 engaging the lug 42 on the follower. |
