The handle (18) for disengaging the journal (22) from the slot (26) in the face plate (28) can be pivoted through 95-180 (115) deg. from its starting position. The fitting comprises a handle mounted on the frame (14) of the window (12) or door, a connecting part (20) operated by the handle, a journal protruding at right angles from the connecting part towards the frame (10) and a face plate secured to the frame. When the window or door is locked, the journal extends into the slot in the face plate and the handle is in a starting position, preferably extending vertically downwards. The handle is used to move the journal out of the slot. Independent claims are also included for (a) a striker (32) comprising a face plate with a slot and a connecting web adjoining this plate, the web containing a space facing the open end of the slot, and (b) a method for opening a window or door with a tilt-and-turn fitting by opening the window or door into via an open position into a tilted position and then guiding it back into the open position.
