G1/S phase specific, S phase specific and meristem specific transcription control element in a transcribed region

The present invention relates to a new identified transcription control element for induction of expression in the G1/S transition phase of the cell cycle, for S phase specific expression and meristem specific expression and the uses thereof. The control element is an E2F box located in the transcribed region of a gene. More particularly the E2F box of the tobacco RNR1b gene was identified and shown to be located in the 5'UTR of the gene. From that position it is responsible for the specific expression of the gene in the G1/S phase, the S phase and in meristem cells. By using the control element in the 5'UTR the invention thus offers a new tool to influence the activity of promoters, to control the expression of a gene of interest. The invention further relates to nucleic acids, vector constructs, host cells and methods to use the invention.
