The use of an arbutine monoester (I) in cosmetic and dermatological compositions for depigmentation and to inhibit tyrosinase and melanin synthesis is new. R = 5 - 21C alkyl or alkenyl, 9 - 21C alkapolyenyl, or it represents a mixture of such alkyl, alkenyl and alkapolyenyl groups.
