An overdrive unit for attachment to the transfer case (Q) of a 4x4 vehicle, the unit having a housing accommodating input shaft (11) and output shaft (M) and an epicyclical train of gears (J,H,L) connecting those shafts, the housing being constructed of two cup-shaped parts (P,U) joined together by a ring of fasteners (FF) that are also usable to attach the unit to the transfer case (Q), and the epicyclical train of gears (J,H,L) having a diameter less than but almost equal to the diameter of the area enclosed by the ring of fastenings (FF).
