The device comprises a chassis, which can be placed on a wall foundation, constituted from two cheek webs (4) connected by two side frames (5). It also comprises a cradle (2), in which a block can be engaged, which is articulated relative to the webs and is fitted with means for rotating the cradle between a block introduction position and a block turned over position where the turned over block is at the base of the row of blocks and means of releasing the block to fall on the row. Beams (3) extending between the cheek webs guide the block when it falls. Openings (28) in each beam receive wedges on which the block rests after being placed, the wedges defining the thickness of the horizontal joint between each row of blocks.
