An illustration layer (11) is applied to the surface to be processed and this layer is loaded with picture data to produce printing and non-printing sites. To release the layer or equalize the surface it is then loaded by an illustration device (9) with the inverted picture data. The illustration device for illustrating the layer is identical with the illustration device for removing or equalizing the layer and can be designed as an ablation device on a laser basis.
