A method of manufacturing an electrochemical cell assembly, in which at least one component which is exposed to the chemical environment during operation of the cell comprises a metal alloy, said method comprising treating a surface of the alloy, prior to incorporation in the assembly, the alloy being one containing nickel in excess of that present in 316L stainless steel and incorporating the treated component in the cell assembly. The method may comprise exposing the alloy to sulphuric acid and passing an electric current through it, so that the ratio of iron to chromium content in the surface region is reduced, compared with the iron to chromium ratio prior to such treatment; and the interfacial resistance of the alloy is also reduced. A further coating of titanium nitride or similar electrocatalytically active coating may be added. |
