PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for reducing a can body in diameter, which can secure reduction per process larger than heretofore and expedite a forming speed, while not causing any problem of a support mechanism such as a bearing brought about by using a metal roll. SOLUTION: A fluid pressure retaining tool 1 having an elastic film 2 expanded with fluid flowing therein is inserted into a can body 60 to reduce the can body in diameter. During that process, the fluid is made to flow into the fluid pressure retaining tool 1 to expand the elastic film 2 to retain the can body by applying pressure to the inner wall of the can body. Moving one or a plurality of rotatable forming rolls 5 from the external part of the can body to the center axis of the can relative to the can body reduces the can body in diameter. After reducing the can body in diameter, the fluid is allowed to flow out of the fluid pressure retaining tool 1 to make the diameter of the fluid pressure retaining tool 1 smaller than the inner diameter of the reduced can body.
