PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser hardening method which can increase the hardening depth without leaving a ferrite structure and can give a good hardened structure without leaving a troostite structure. SOLUTION: In the laser hardening method for hardening the surface of a work by the irradiation with a laser beam, a warmth-keeping heating period A'-C is caused to follow a hardening heating period A-A'. Securing a sufficient heating period necessary for hardening is compatibilized with steep cooling of a work. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
