PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor suitable for a cathode-ray tube capable of affording an image of high luminance with high resolution and a method for production thereof. SOLUTION: The phosphor has a granular shape, comprises a principal component which is a Y2SiO5 crystal phase containing an activator dispersed therein and has 2-7% ratio of the content of aγ-Y2Si2O7 crystal phase to the content of a Y2SiO5 crystal phase and <0.1% ratio of the content of aβ-Y2Si2O7 phase. The phosphor is prepared by carrying out a sphering treatment with a thermal plasma and then heat-treating the resultant spherical material at 1,500-1,700°C. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
