PURPOSE: A gamma correction device and method are provided to reduce the number of memories for storing gamma correction tables to simplify hardware construction. CONSTITUTION: A gamma correction device carries out two-dimensional gamma interpolation using a plurality of composite gamma correction tables that are obtained by combining a plurality of gamma correction tables according to the first signal value. The plurality of composite gamma correction tables are generated in such a manner that each of the plurality of gamma correction tables is divided into a plurality of groups according to the second signal value and the divided gamma correction tables are combined according to a predetermined rule. The first signal corresponds to an average luminance signal, and the second signal is an input video signal. The plurality of composite gamma correction tables(220-1,220-2,220-3,220-4) are stored in different table memories.
