PURPOSE:To remove a volatile organic compound from soil contaminated therewith by mixing the soil with a combination of an acidic inorganic compound and a basic inorganic compound which can generate heat by the neutralization reaction between them. CONSTITUTION:'The volatile organic compound' as used herein means a hydrocarbon derivative having an atmospheric boiling point of 150 deg.C or below i.e., a hydrocarbon or a compound derived by replacing at least one constituent hydrogen atom of the hydrocarbon by halogen, hydroxyl, amino or the like and is artificially contained in soil. It is exemplified by trichloroethylene. As the acidic inorganic compound, one (e.g. sulfuric acid) which has a pH of 3 or below when measured in a 1wt.% aqueous solution is desirable. As the basic inorganic compound, one (e.g. quick lime) having a pH of 10 or above when measured in a 1wt.% aqueous solution or suspension is desirable. When these compound are in the form of liquids or concentrated aqueous solutions at ordinary temperature, they are used after being diluted with water to concentrations of about 10-80wt.%. The water content of the soil to be treated is desirably 10-30wt.%. The temperature of the soil is desirably 15 deg.C or above. The total amount of the inorganic compounds added is 0.1-150g/kg. |
