PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a back light capable of arranging both of an arc tube and a sealed tube part of an electric discharge tube inward on both ends of one end surface of a light guiding plate and capable of making visual light incident along the overall length of the one end surface of the light guiding plate and the electric discharge tube for the back light. SOLUTION: An airtight container is formed on both end parts of an arc tube part 12 made of a translucent material by respectively communicating and connecting the sealed tube parts 14 having a first sealed part 18 and a second sealed part 19 made of the translucent material and formed by sealing a tubular body part 16 and both end openings of the tubular body part 16 to each other in a roughly orthogonal state, electric discharge gas is sealed in the airtight container, a part of an electric discharge electrode 20 is sealed in the first sealed part 18 of each of the sealed tube parts 14, an outer surface 19a of the second sealed part 19 is formed in a roughly flat surface, and the arc tube part 12 is connected to the tubular body part 16 at the nearest position of the second sealed part 19. |
