PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an opening blocking member for a steel element joint, which is easily detachable from an opening when a steel element is inserted into the opening, and to provide a method for protecting the opening of the steel element joint. SOLUTION: The opening blocking member, i.e., a dummy joint 1, has a blocking portion 1c fitted into the opening 13e2 and a base portion 1b connected to the blocking portion 1c, and a groove depth facing surface 1c1 of the blocking portion 1c has a V-shaped variation absorbing recess 1c2 formed at about the center thereof, and two projections 1c3, 1c4 formed on both sides of the recess 1c2. When a pressing force is applied from the interior of a fitting groove 13e to the exterior of the same, the two projections 13c3. etc., are deformed in a manner approaching each other, and then the blocking portion 1c is squeezed out of the opening 13e2 to the outside, whereby the entire dummy joint 1 slips out of the joint 13 to the outside.
