PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data retention device having excellent operability with a more general-purpose configuration and capable of enhancing security.

SOLUTION: A PC 10 is provided with a signature generating section 11 and an IC card reading section 12. An MO disk device 20 is provided with a tamperfree clock 21. A signature key 31 is stored in the built-in ROM of an IC card 30. The IC card 30 is possessed basically by an authorized user. The signature generating section 11, when data is preserved in an MO disk 22, generates a signature (an authenticator) by the data, time information of the tamperfree clock 21 and the signature key 31, and the data and time information is written in a user area 22a and the signature is written in a write-once area 22b.
