<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new optical modulator which suppresses a chirp quantity and makes a light pulse generation system small-sized and low-cost on the whole. <P>SOLUTION: The optical modulator having a substrate 1 made of a material having an electrooptic effect, an optical waveguide part 2 which is formed on the substrate and includes a plurality of branch waveguides 2' branching and multiplexing incident light, and signal electrodes 5 and a ground electrode 4 for modulating the light passing in the optical waveguides is characterized in that a delay circuit 5' is interposed in at least portions of the signal electrodes 5-1 and 5-2, and a signal electric field whose phase is delayed as specified is applied to the portions of the branching waveguides. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
