<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective liquid crystal display device wherein brightness especially in a transmissive mode is improved and which has excellent visibility. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device 20 is the transflective liquid crystal display device wherein a liquid crystal 26 is held between an upper substrate 24 and a lower substrate 23 opposing each other and a transflective layer 35 including cholesteric liquid crystal films 34r, 34g and 34b is provided above the lower substrate 23 an which is provided with a backlight 22. Optical retardation layers 42 and 44 and polarizers 43 and 45 are provided in this order from the sides of respective substrates on the outer surfaces of the upper and the lower substrates 24 and 23, respectively, and a pigmented color filter layer 32 including pigmented films 31r, 31g and 31b transmitting color light beams having the same colors as the colors of selective reflection light beams of the cholesteric liquid crystal films 34r, 34g and 34b, respectively, is provided on the lower side of the transflective layer 35. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
