PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser element having good optical output to current characteristics without bringing about a kink when a return light exists, by solving the problem that, when a semiconductor laser element is actually mounted in an optical disk unit, a laser beam reflected on the surface of the disk is returned to the laser element to impart an influence to the operating state of the laser element. SOLUTION: A method for sorting the semiconductor laser element comprises the steps of controlling a temperature of the laser element, measuring the optical output current characteristics under the condition which is equivalent to that in which the return beam exists, and sorting the laser element having the optical output to current characteristics having good linearity up to a desired optical output with a high kink level.
