PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a switching device having a reduced bulkiness for high-rate applications which has a better performance and is easier to realize and control than a switching device based on conventional technology.

SOLUTION: The switching device provided with a plurality of input and output terminals interconnected by an interconnection point matrix transmits electric signals supplied from the input terminals to the output terminals through transmission lines in accordance with a prescribed switching plan. Each transmission line is provided with a signal path for transmitting an electric signal and a voltage reference path. Interconnection points are arranged in the matrix, so that two different transmission lines have one common voltage reference path. The switching device is used for packet switching in optical transmission.
