<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent defective pixels from occurring which flicker in the still picture display mode. <P>SOLUTION: The planar display device is provided with display pixels PX of a structure holding a light modulation layer between a pair of electrodes, pixel switches 11 for retrieving video signals, static memory parts 13 for holding the video signals applied to the display pixels PX from the pixel switches, and connection control parts 14 for controlling the electrical connections between the display pixels PX and the static memory parts 13.
