PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize and make thinner an observation optical system which guides an original image on a liquid crystal display (LCD) or the like to the eyeball of an observer. SOLUTION: The observation optical system, which guides the light of the original image displayed on a display means 4 to the eyeball, has a first curved plane 1 which totally reflects or passes light, and a second curved plane 2 which reflects the light toward the first curved plane 1, the optical power of the first curved plane 1 is different with an azimuth angle, and the condition|r<SB>x</SB>|<|r<SB>y</SB>|is satisfied, where r<SB>y</SB>stands for a near axis curvature radius at the generatrix section of the first curved plane 1, and r<SB>x</SB>stands for the near axis curvature radius at a degeneratrix section.
