PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame-retardant polyester fiber which can exhibit effective flame retardancy with a small amount of a flame retardant, is not pollutive, and has excellent light resistance and heat resistance. SOLUTION: This polyester fiber comprises a polyester obtained by copolymerizing a low mol.wt. polyester comprising an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or its lower alkyl ester, a diol component, and a phosphinic acid derivative represented by the general formula (1) [Y is a monovalent organic group represented by the general formula (2) or (3)] to give a phosphorus content of at least 2,000 ppm in the polymer.
