<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflection type liquid crystal display which is made lightweight, small-sized, and thin on the whole and can obtain a bright display. <P>SOLUTION: An electrooptic substance layer (15) of liquid crystal, etc., is sandwiched between a transparent substrate (13) such as a glass substrate and a metallic substrate (14). On the surface of the metallic substrate (14) on the side of the electrooptic substance layer, an uneven light diffuse reflecting surface (14A) is formed and on the light diffuse reflecting surface, an insulating layer (25) is formed. The insulating layer (25) has at its end part a light incidence end surface (21) for introducing external illumination light (L) in the insulating layer. When it is dark in an atmosphere, the external light is reflected by the light diffuse reflecting surface to return to the transparent substrate side, thereby making display. If it is too dark in the atmosphere to make the display using the external light, on the other hand, the external illumination light is guided in the insulating layer and irregularly reflected by the light diffuse reflecting surface to be directed to an observer, so that display can be made even in dark environment. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
