PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of discriminating a plurality of high pressure discharge lamps in different rated power from each other, and capable of making respective high pressure discharge lamps light in rated power, and to provide an illumination device. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device comprises a direct current power source 1, a power conversion circuit 2 converting the electric power from the direct current power source 1, and supplying it to the high pressure discharge lamp 3, a lighting control circuit 4 controlling the electric power supplied from the power conversion circuit 2, a detection means 5 detecting that electric property, optical property, and thermal property of the high pressure discharge lamp 3 after turning on the direct current power source exceed a threshold value, a timer means 6 integrating the time until exceeding the threshold value, and a discriminating means 7 discriminating the kind of the high pressure discharge lamp depending on the length of time integrated at the timer means 6.
