PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device wherein the temperature rise can be effectively suppressed without using a cooling fan, and also, which can be miniaturized, as to the image reading device using a light source producing heat. SOLUTION: The image reading device 1 is provided with the light source (xenon lamp) 13 for irradiating an original on an original platen (contact glass) 23 with light, a carriage 11 with the light source 13 placed moving just under the original platen 23, and a temperature detecting means (temperature sensor) 50 for detecting the temperature in an area under the original platen 23, and also, the device is provided with a control part for controlling the light source 13 and the carriage 11 based on the detected temperature information, and in the case the temperature equal to or exceeding a 1st prescribed threshold is detected by the temperature detecting means 50, the carriage 11 is moved backward and forward by the control part in a state where the light source 13 is turned off.
