PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte that can be used for an electrolytic capacitor and an electric double layer capacitor, a battery having a charging/discharging mechanism by the charge transfer of an ion, an electrochromic display element, and the like, at the same time, has high electrical conductance, prevents resin, rubber, and metal from deteriorating even in electrochemical deterioration, and has thermally high stability, and to provide an electrochemical element which uses the electrolyte. SOLUTION: In the electrolyte, salt where an imidazole compound shown by an expression (1) is set to be a cation constituent is used as an electrolyte. The electrochemical element uses the electrolyte. (In the expression, R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>are groups that are selected from among an alkyl group where the number of carbon is set to 1 to 3, a phenyl group, and a benzyl group; R<SB>2</SB>is hydrogen; the R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>3</SB>may be the same group, or a different group.).
