The emergency isolator for a motor vehicle electrical system in an accident has an electrical cable (4) connected at one end to the negative terminal of the battery and at its other end to an extractable sleeve (3) connected to the operating cylinder (2) of the seat belt pretensioner. On operation, the piston of the pretensioning cylinder releases the connection and isolates the battery.
