An operating element (1) for a motor vehicle has a rotating handle (2) with a display window (6) that can be illuminated via an optical waveguide (7) linked to light sources (9-12). The display window is illuminated with light of a first color in a first angular section of the handle and with light of a second color in a second angular section. The invention provides a two color display, e.g. blue and red for a temperature controller so that the display window is more easily interpreted at night.
