Monitoring system for the operation of an energy transfer chain that has a number of linked chain links and serves to guide hose, cable or similar between together two connection points (2, 3) that move relative to each other. At least one sensor is provided for measuring the force acting on the chain (1) or a part thereof. The measured force is compared in a comparison unit (9) with a preset reference value (10). A signal is generated when the measured force lies outside a tolerance range (14). The invention also relates to a corresponding energy transfer chain.
