Separating nucleic acids (NA) from other cell components, comprising: (a) lysis and precipitation of lysate components so that NA remains in solution; and (b) filtering the lysate in a separation device fitted with a filter material which almost entirely covers the internal surfaces of the device, is new. An Independent claim is also included for the separation device, comprising: (a) a column (1); (b) a chromatographic material (3); and (c) a filter material (5), within the column.
