The invention relates to an improvement to echometric measurement methods for telephone lines. According to the invention, the improvement consists in taking account of electrical measurements by performing a step in which the length of the line is calculated by locating the echo corresponding to the remote end. For this purpose, two terminals are determined between which the line length value is located. The first of said terminals corresponds to the minimum length Lmin and is calculated from the capacity measurement in common mode C, which is the capacity between a wire of the line and the cable screen. The second terminal corresponds to the maximum length Lmax of the line and is calculated from the effective capacity measurement of the line.
