A steering column mounted transmission shift control for a motor vehicle, alternatively adapted for operating either the control valve of an automatic transmission, or the lowreverse second-high selectors of a manual transmission comprises an arm 22 secured to the usual control tube 20 surrounding the steering shaft 12, and linked to the ranging valve of the automatic transmission to operate the valve by turning movement of the control tube when required for an automatic transmission, the arrangement being supplemented, when required for a manual transmission, by a manual package comprising, as shown in Fig. 1, a split bracket 44, 46 clamped fixedly around the stationary outer steering column 12, and pivotally carrying arms 46, 48 linked respectively to the low-reverse and second-high selectors of the manual transmission, and having apertures 78, 80 to receive a clutch-pin 74 secured to the automatic arm 22 which is moved axially with the control tube 20 for selectively clutching the arms 46, 48 by the cross-shift. movement of the usual manual lever 16, subsequent turning movement of which pivots the selected arm 46 or 48 for gear establishment. A spring 30, biasing the control tube 20 upwards, reacts on a fixed end-cap 26 supporting a sealed bearing 32 for the steering shaft. In Figs. 4 to 8, not shown, the manual selector arms (102, 104) pivot on a pin (98) on an offset portion (96) of the clamp (82), and the automatic arm 22 pivotally carries a U-shaped link (106) having the clutch pin (70) engageable with the manual selector arms as in Fig. 1. In Figs. 9 and 10, not shown, the arrangement is as shown in Fig. 1, but the selector clutch pin 70 lies radially outside the linking aperture 66 in the automatic arm 22. In Figs. 11 to 14, not shown, a manual shift package assembly is slid on to the lower end of the steering column. The manual arms (146, 148) lie side-by-side, both on the lower side of the automatic arm 22, and turn about the axis of the steering-column on a cupped member slidable on the control tube 20 and retained on the fixed column 12 by a snap-ring (150). A selector pin (158) bolted to the automatic arm 22 passes through an arcuate slot in the adjacent manual arm (146) and has an end-pin and a flange for selective turning engagement with the arms (148, 146).
