The air bag unit (2) fits in a dashboard (1). The air bag housing (5) is fitted to a holding plate (4), which projects vertically downward from the underside of the dashboard by means of a sliding and/or push-in connection on the keyhole principle. A releasable fixing device (10) locks the airbag housing to an adjacent bodywork component.
