[Also in Division F2] An anesthesia machine, shown as a flow diagram in Fig. 1, comprises an oxygen source 1, a supply line 5 leading from the source, to a by-pass valve 8 comprising a body 10 (Fig. 2) with a through bore 21 and a partial bore 23 transverse to the through bore and linking the through bore with an exterior surface of the valve, the line 5 including a pressure regulator, a needle valve 3 and a flowmeter 4 to measure the oxygen flow rate, a first supply outlet line 32 from the by-pass valve having three sub branches each of which includes a needle valve 35 and a flow meter 36 and leads to a vaporiser 37 which includes a liquid anesthetic agent, a heater and thermostat and means for bubbling oxygen through the liquid, an outlet from the vaporiser joining a second outlet line 7 from the by-pass valve and entering an altitude compensator valve 83. The vaporisers are controlled by shut-off valve assemblies which may be linked together by an interlock to preclude the use of more than one vaporised agent at a given time. The shut off valve (see Fig. 4) includes a body portion 54 with inlet openings 64 and outlet openings 65, a camshaft 55, a pair of thrust pins 58 and balls 59. Balls 59 are positioned in bores 66 and spring biased to maintain them against thrust pin noses 68. The balls close openings 69 when thrust pins 58 are located in grooves 60. When rotated, every quarter turn the camshaft cams the thrust pins to force balls 59 from sealing engagement with openings 69 and thus opens the valve. The altitude compensator valve (see Fig. 5) contains a diaphram 87 held in place at 88 by pressure contact between lower part of body portion 85 and upper part of cap 89, caused by clamp 94. A hollow piston 96 is connected to the diaphram, and a compression spring 100 is received within the piston. Gas enters the valve through inlet elbow 84, displaces diaphragm 87 and leaves through opening 92. Pressure on the diaphragm 87 due to the piston 96 may be varied by means of an adjusting screw 102 so that the pressure of the gas flowing through the valve may be reduced by a required amount.
