The engine pre-warming method has the inlet and outlet valves (20,24) of at least one engine cylinder (30) opened simultaneously or brought into a position which allows the combustion space (12) to be used for heating the stationary IC engine (10) by combustion of air supplied via an electric motor external air source (38,48) and fuel supplied via the fuel injection valve (32), upon detonation via a spark plug.
