Methods and systems for positioning a variable-geometry member disposed within a variable geometry turbocharger involve determining a boost pressure target for the turbocharger and comparing the same to an actual boost pressure to calculate an error value, errboost, from which a first new variable-geometry member position is determined using a proportional integral differential scheme. A second new variable-geometry member position can be determined based on measured engine speed, and the variable geometry member can be positioned in accordance with the first new variable-geometry member position when the engine is in a power mode and in accordance with the second new variable-geometry member position when the engine is in a braking mode.
