An apparatus and method for cutting a surgical suture at first and second different locations along its length, the surgical suture having a cross-section that is perpendicular to its length. A first cutting die having a first face with a first channel therein is provided for receiving at least a portion of the cross-section of the surgical suture at the first location along the length of the surgical suture. A second cutting die having a second face with a second channel therein is provided for receiving at least a portion of the cross-section of the surgical suture at the second location along the length of the surgical suture. A third cutting die having a third face and a fourth cutting die having a fourth face are also provided. A first cutting blade is provided for cutting the surgical suture at a point adjacent to the first location when the first face of the first cutting die is positioned against the third face of the third cutting die. Finally, a second cutting blade is provided for cutting the surgical suture at a point adjacent to the second location when the second face of the second cutting die is positioned against the fourth face of the fourth cutting die and the cross-section of the surgical suture at the first location along the length of the surgical suture is at least partially positioned in the first channel.
