EFFICIENT INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE VALVE ACTUATOR

An engine 20 with an efficient valve actuator 70 is disclosed. The engine 20 employs a first force to hold a valve element 40 of the engine 20 open during a normal valve event and a second force to hold the valve element 40 open during an exhaust gas recirculation event. The valve actuator 70 may be operated using pressurized fluid adapted to extend an actuator piston 74 through an actuator cylinder 72. The first force may be derived from a mechanically driven actuator 58, while the second force may be derived from a high pressure rail 86 of the engine 20. A control valve 88 may be employed to direct either low pressure 84 or high pressure 86 oil to the valve actuator cylinder 72.
